M A N T E X N E W S L E T T E R Number 58 - mid-November 2001 Writing + Typography + News ------ ISSN 1470-1863 ----- 0----- 'Making Digital Type Look Good' This is the most attractive book on typography I have seen for a long time. Bob Carter offers a comprehensive explanation of digital type and shows how it can be used to stunning effect. The book is a work of art in terms of print production. Every page is elegantly designed, deeply 'layered', colour-coded, and illustrated with well-chosen examples. If you are interested in typography, web design, or beautifully made books, this is one you can't afford to miss. What critical methods are used? Who decides what to read? And for a subject that takes itself seriously, isn't it all a bit airy-fairy? Robert Eaglestone tackles these questions head on in a book which de-mystifies the subject. And he comes up with good answers and constructive advice without using any of the obscure jargon which these days common in the humanities. This will be useful for undergraduates, but also for teachers who might want to clarify some of the important principles for classroom practice. http://www.mantex.co.uk/reviews/eaglestn.htm 0----- 'Writing Essays' I bet you never thought study skills guidance manuals could be a laugh. Robert Marggraf Turley thinks otherwise. His guide to essay writing talks you through the process - from analysing the question to editing the script - but in a manner which is attractively amusing. He covers all the important issues - from structure to references and quotations, which give *lots* of people problems [you're not alone]. His explanations are delivered with a witty panache. We have recently been the victim of a vicious mail bomb attack, in which our address was forged on a mailing to multiple recipients. This resulted in what I believe is called an endlessly recursive mail loop. Messages are rejected from dead addresses and bounced back to fill your mailbox at the rate of thousands a day. If anybody knows how to protect against this sort of thing - PLEASE let us know. Some of the other unlucky people in the multiple addressees could have been subscribers from Yahoo.com - because recent newsletters have been bounced back with a warning note. If you subscribe from a Yahoo.com address or know anybody who does, please bear with us.[1] We have asked Yahoo for guidance, and we'll try to get the newsletter to these subscribers by a different route. [1] Yes, I'm aware that if they don't receive the newsletter, they won't be able to read this. [2] Sorry about the heavy tone. 0----- 'New Oxford Dictionary of English' This is a new type of dictionary based on fresh principles. Oxford University Press have created a database of words in English as they are currently used. The 'New' in the title also refers to the fact that words are listed with their current meaning *first* - then illustrated by contemporary examples. The result might not please those who prefer the traditional emphasis on etymological history - but if you want a dictionary of English as it is used *today* - then this is the reference for you. It also includes short explanations of tricky grammar issues (such as 'who' and 'whom') as well as encyclopedia-type entries on famous people, places, and http://www.mantex.co.uk/reviews/oxf-new.htm 0----- COMING SOON 'Blown to Bits' [e-Commerce] 'Dictionary of Weird and Wonderful Words' 'Flash in Easy Steps' 'Students Must Write' 'How to Write Critical Essays' 'Crime and the Internet' 'Innovating in Higher Education' (c) Copyright 2001, MANTEX All Rights Reserved PO Box 100 Tel +44 0161 432 5811 Manchester Fax +44 0161 443 2766 M20 6GZ UK www.mantex.co.uk If you like this newsletter, PLEASE FORWARD IT to friends and colleagues.
