M A N T E X N E W S L E T T E R Number 40 - January 2001 Writing and Technology ----- ISSN 1470-1863 ---- 0----- New Forms of Story-telling Janet Murray's book 'Hamlet on the Holodeck' has become one of the central studies of hypertext. She looks at the new forms of story telling which have become possible using the Web, multimedia, virtual reality, and MUDs and MOOs. If you are interested in exploring the vast range of new writing forms and environments, then this is a must. Strongest contender for a breakthrough in narrative possibilities seems to be a combination of video and the Web. http://www.mantex.co.uk/reviews/murray.htm 0----- 'Affiliate Selling' 'Make money whilst you're asleep' - that's how affiliate programmes are often described. Basically, a company trading on the Net will pay *you* for customers you send to their site. They will do all the work for you, and even create Web pages if you don't have your own. Some people are making a living wage out of the arrangement. The details are fairly simple, but you do need a clear guide, plus a list of all the relevant addresses - and this book has them all. If you want to make a cheap, simple, and trouble-free entry into e-commerce, this is an excellent place to begin. Highly recommended. http://www.mantex.co.uk/reviews/helm.htm 0----- Great Writers - Vladimir Nabokov Nabokov is famous as the author of 'Lolita' - the best-selling novel which deals humorously, even lyrically, with the dangerous subject of paedophilia. He wrote lots of other novels and stories - and translated many of them from his original language of Russian. This is the latest addition to our gallery of great writers - with a guide to the best of his works in print. http://www.mantex.co.uk/ou/a319/nabo-00.htm 0----- 'The Origins of the Internet' Journalist and academic John Naughton has a very readable account of how the Internet was built - and who were the people responsible for its major developments. His story goes from the first stirrings in the post-war years up to the late 1990s. He explains the technical side of the Internet in a vivid and lively manner which beginners and non-technical readers will enjoy. It's been out a while, but is now available in paperback. That's because his books are well written, well designed, and beautifully produced - and he does it all himself. He is a major figure in the world of graphic design, information architecture, and the efficient presentation of data. Read his work and believe me, you will feel stimulated. All three of his books have done well in the last year. They are exquisite productions, and they are now being marketed in the UK at what seem to be cheaper prices than their US equivalents. http://www.mantex.co.uk/reviews/tufte-01.htm http://www.mantex.co.uk/reviews/tufte-02.htm http://www.mantex.co.uk/reviews/tufte-03.htm 0----- RIP the Clip The Office Assistant is an animated graphic that helps deliver explanations and tips.
