    Open Sources Vs Microsoft
Microsoft are in big trouble. The US government has won its first round against them - and the forces of the Open Source movement are mobilising to make the alternative case for software which is free to anyone who wants it. Raymond cover 'The Cathedral and the Bazaar' is hot off the press from O'Reilly publications - a compilation of four long polemical essays which argue the case for a revolution in IT commerce. In the light of the recent decision against Microsoft, this book could become an important item in the debate. It spells out the arguments for a revolution in software design. These are the people who have something new to say. Review article and full details at --

    Interior Design
If you are interested in the art of interior design - from your basement to your bathroom - then forget 'House & Gardens', forget 'Elle Decoration', and you can even forget 'Architectural Digest'. There's only one magazine which holds up in this field, and that's 'The World of Interiors'.

And why is it so good? Because the photography is very high standard, the editors have the courage to extend their pictures over double page spreads, and there is a democratic spirit alive in what might seem like an elitist supplement. At first you might think the magazine is snobbish - but it's not. They are just as likely to feature a potting shed in Sheffield as a second home in Tuscany (as the latest issue proves). £3.50 per issue, subscriptions £42.00 for 12 issues -

    Essay-Writing Skills

These are all skills which most people are never taught. Help is at hand. 'Writing Essays: guidance notes for students' is our best-selling title. Full details and sample pages at --

    Picture Base CD-ROMs
20th C cover Do you use CD-ROMs in support of teaching? AVP has a catalogue of materials which might be of help. They combine pictures, text, a full search facility, and a notepad into which you can add your own comments. They cover art, geography, history, languages, literature, maths, music, and science. Most of the titles are reasonably cheap - about the price of a substantial textbook - and a five user licence is £69.00 + VAT. There's a review article of their 'Twentieth Century World' at

    'Type in Motion'
Bellantoni cover Do you remember the opening title sequences from 'Psycho' and 'The Man with the Golden Arm'? They were designed by Saul Bass, and used animated fonts. How type is used in motion pictures, TV, promotional videos, even on CDs is the subject of 'Type in Motion' - a glossy compilation of work from the hippest design studios. Details at --

    'Accidental Empires'
This is another set text from the Open University's new course in IT - 'You, Your Computer, and the Internet'. It's an irreverent account of how computers and the Internet were developed. Cringely cover You might have seen the TV series called 'The Revenge of the Nerds' which was based on Robert X. Cringely's expose of Bill Gates and Steve Jobs [who he calls a 'sociopath']. Cringely is a well-informed historian, but he takes no prisoners in this witty and vigorous account of How the Net was Won.
