It is fairly hard going - though of course I assume we've both read it in English translation, which might be a factor. But some quite impressive and important books are like this. Elizabeth Eisenstein's "The printing press as an agent of change" is rather similar - encyclopedic, but hard-going.

You have my sympathy Simon. It may be the case that the author has assumed that the readers must have known a lot about the topics and I just failed to meet his expectations. Nevertheless, I do not believe that I should be deprived of the information in the book because of the lack of prior knowledge. This book review helped a little bit by highlighting the most important arguments of the book. Yet, I wish the author could have summarized the book in a few hundred words.

I have found this book rather inaccessible because it is too long and hard to follow.
